The Outstretched Hand Publications

About the Outstretched Hand

This website is dedicated to sorrowful hearts everywhere. Trusting, loving arms will embrace them and willing ears will listen to them tell their story, feel their pain and give them permission to grieve.

In the beginning of grief, concentration is poor, reading is difficult, comprehension is inconsistent. Take your time to read when you can and what you can. Each person grieves in his or her own unique way.

The Outstretched Hand was set up in 1980 to act as an advocate for the dying and bereaved. This work grew out of the awareness of Teresa Spencer Plane RN, ADEC and her late husband, Dr. Carl Spencer whilst caring for families during the dying trajectory of a loved one.

More than 3000 families were cared for in the pioneer Palliative Care Unit of Mt. Carmel Hospital, Seven Hills and the home care programme of the Outstretched Hand Foundation during the years from 1978 to 1994.

Teresa was a founding member of the NSW Palliative Care Association and the National Association of Loss and Grief and was made a life member of N.A.L.A.G. in 1988.

As a nurse educator, Teresa presented the “Time to Live - Time to Die” programmes for both the University of Western Sydney and Charles Sturt University.

The Outstretched Hand Publications, authored by health professionals working in the fields of palliative care and bereavement counselling, have been available to hospitals, Funeral Directors, Medical Practitioners, schools and others who paid a fee to cover the cost of printing and postage.

These publications are now offered for down loading without charge. If you have found the information in these publications has been of help to you, you may care to make a donation that will enable our volunteers to continue to expand our services. All donations are very greatly appreciated.

The Outstretched Hand is offering a new programme to access the inner peace and fulfilment within for people over 60 years of age, “Ageing With Attitude”.
